Australian Formula Ford returns to the big stage at Winton

This weekend, Australian Formula Ford will be proudly supporting the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, after securing a grid slot for the 2019 Truck Assist Winton SuperSprint. Current Championship leader Tom Sargent will be making his debut at Winton in front of a large Supercars crowd. The 17-year-old New South Welshman isn't new to the pressure associated with an internationally televised round. Last year he stepped up and delivered on the Supercars stage, scoring his maiden Australian Formula Ford round podium at the OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park. This weekend we head into round three with a mere three points separating the top three drivers in the standings. Sargent is closely followed by Callum Hedge and Zac Soutar, who both sit second, equal in points. 2018 NZ Formula Ford champion Callum Hedge has never raced at Winton, but has racked up a sum of practice laps over the summer break alongside his Sonic team-mates. Soutar is the most experienced of the leading trio, having raced at Winton in both the Victorian and the Australian Formula Ford Championships since 2017 - including a top 10 finish during the 2017 Winton SuperSprint. Sonic Motor Racing Services' Angelo Mouzouris is currently placed fourth in the championship, just 18 points shy of Sargent. Mouzouris will definitely be chasing that elusive breakthrough weekend to place himself in the fight for the title. Synergy Motorsport driver Cody Burcher rounds out the top five in the title heading into Winton, after taking his maiden Australian Formula Ford round podium at Queensland Raceway. The Sydney-based teenager will also be looking to etch his name into the memory of the thousands of Supercars fans this weekend and gathering as many points as possible. Round three of the Australian Formula Ford Championship will kick off this Friday with two practice sessions and qualifying, followed by race one on Saturday and two more races on Sunday.
