Another bumper grid set for Phillip Island

This weekend Australian Formula Ford will be back at Phillip Island for the penultimate round of the 2018 Australian championship. Another solid grid of 28 cars have entered for this weekend, which will be held in conjunction with the last round of the 2018 Victorian Formula Ford Series. Mygale driver Hunter McElrea is currently leading the championship, 38 points clear of Sonic Motor Racing Services team-mate Hamish Ribarits, while Mygale privateer Zac Soutar is sitting in third, 49 points behind the Sonicduo. So far this year, McElrea has won 11 out of 15 races and heads to Phillip Island loaded with confidence to extend his title buffer. McElrea is returning to Australia this week after a positive test in a USF2000 car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last weekend. BF Racing driver Nathan Herne is fourth in the National championship and currently leading the Victorian Formula Ford Series in the Fiesta class. Herne is currently 26 points clear of Spectrum driver Liam McLellan in the Victorian Series and five points ahead of the Melbourne-based driver in the National standings. In the FF1600 class, reigning Victorian champion Brendan Jones is currently leading by 78 points, keeping well clear of Peter Fitzgerald's Spectrum and John Connelly's American-built Citation. 2016 Australian Formula Ford champion, Leanne Tander, will be making a come-back to the field in her beautifully prepared FF1600 Stealth. Last year, Tander made a one-off appearance at Phillip Island, but was forced to retire on the Sunday due to an engine failure. In 2016 Tander was the first woman to win the Australian Formula Ford title, in the same car that Hunter McElrea is now driving. The on-track action will kick off on Friday with an open practice day, followed by qualifying and race one on Saturday and a pair of races on Sunday.
