LIDDELL HEADS FF1600 ROUND AT SANDOWN

New South Welshman Jason Liddell claimed round two of the 2018 Australian FF1600 Championship at Sandown Raceway over the weekend. Our National FF1600 drivers ventured to Sandown for a conjoined round that included the 2018 Australian Formula Ford Championship, the Australian FF1600 Championship and the Victorian Formula Ford Series. Queenslander Dylan Fahey started race one from the front row, next to reigning Victorian champion Brendan Jones. Due to safety car interventions, our drivers had a handful of laps under their sleeves when the chequered flag was dropped for race one. Fahey finished first in the National field and second overall in the FF1600 class, while Tim Hamilton finished third after claiming the fastest lap of the race. In race two, Fahey had a near-perfect launch off the line and enjoyed a race-long battle with Jones for the outright win. In the end, it was the Queenslander who crossed the line first, followed by Jones and Hamilton. Hamilton's Spectrum 010 was once again the fastest FF1600 car on track during race two. At the start of race three, Jones snatched the lead while Hamilton jumped in front of Fahey before a safety car was deployed. During the safety car restart, Fahey and Hamilton were caught out by the cars in front, resulting in an unlucky nose-to-tail incident which forced both Queenslanders to retire from the race. This took the round favourites out of contention and handed the National FF1600 round win to Jason Liddell. Liddell qualified 7th outright on Saturday morning and climbed his way up to 4th in race three, keeping clear of trouble for the entirety of the weekend. The New South Welshman was followed on the National FF1600 podium by Robert Rowe and Dylan Fahey. Thanks to his stellar performance in races one and two, Fahey is now leading the FF1600 championship, just four points clear of Hamilton. Liddell's round win at Sandown allowed him to close the gap with Rowe, who currently sits third in the Championship standings on 80 points. The third and last round of the 2018 Australian FF1600 Championship will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park on October 26th-28th.
