JEFF THOMPSON MEMORIAL

We are sorry to inform our competitors of the death of Jeff Thompson, a true racing enthusiast and one of the first Australian Formula Ford drivers. He competed in 1969, when the category first launched in Australia.

Jeff built an Elfin 600 FF from parts whilst he was an apprentice jeweller.

He raced & built many other cars including an Elfin 600 F2 car, a Ford Cortina, which raced in the Bathurst 500 and a Lotus 20b FJ. He also competed in the not to be forgotten Historic yellow Hawke DL17, a car that was previously driven by Richard Davison and Jeff Senior, which he raced in our 40th anniversary year (2009).

Jeff died peacefully in his sleep on the 20th of May and will be remembered by many for his great enthusiasm for life, along with a deep passion for the Formula Ford category. His enthusiasm towards Formula Ford is remembered in his long-standing perpetual trophy, presented every year at Historic Sandown.

The Jeff Thompson trophy is awarded to the competitor who races to celebrate the cars (not just the winner), in the true spirit of Historic Formula Ford.

Thank you Jeff for 49 years of Formula Ford camaraderie, you will never be forgotten.
