Final Round Australian Formula Ford Series

An enthralling 2014 Australian National Formula Ford Series will be decided at the popular Island Magic event at Phillip Island, November 29 – 30, where both Kent and Fiesta Series winners will be crowned.

A massive 31-car grid will line up for the final round of six at the Island, the biggest grid seen in National Formula Ford competition since the Fiesta class was introduced almost a decade ago.

Bolstering the grid are two internationals, with North American Spectrum drivers Tristan DeGrand and Max Mallinen making their way to Australia as part of a Borland Racing Developments international driver scholarship.

Both emerging talents are highly fancied to perform well, with Mallinen a US Majors winner in 2014 and DeGrand the newly crowned Toyo Tyres Canadian Formula F1600 champion. The US entries will be looked after by Ellery Motorsport Enterprises.

The series standings are incredibly close in both classes, with Spectrum’s James Golding carrying a 21-point margin over the Volvo Parts Mygale of Tom Randle in the Fiesta class, and James Garley leading Cameron Walters by a single point in the Kents, both driving the French Mygale chassis.

Spurring the Fiesta drivers along is the chance to win a two day test in the United States as part of the Mazda Road to Indy initiative. They will test a Cooper Tyres National USF2000 powered by Mazda car as well as receive financial incentive to compete in the series in 2015.

Mygale chassis have enjoyed a strong second half to season 2014, with the top three cars at the last round at Sydney Motorsport Park all Mygales from three different teams, Jordan Lloyd for BF Racing, Nick Rowe with Sonic Motorsport Services and Dream Motorsport’s Tom Randle.

Randle is among the favourites to take the fight to Series leader Golding, having won the previous National round and a recent State round at Phillip Island in October.

The Gippsland Body Builders Spectrum of Golding has been strong and very consistent in the previous five rounds, and is also an experienced hand around the fast flowing Phillip Island circuit, making him a force to be reckoned with.

Garley has been consistent this year, relishing in the opportunity to race his Kent Formula Ford in National competition once more.

Walters has momentum having claimed three-round wins this year in the 1600 class and will be on the attack at the Island. With only one-point separating the two, both drivers will have to make every lap and small opportunity count.

The Kent Series winner will be awarded with a drive of a Borland Racing Developments made Spectrum 014Z F2000, the same car which successfully campaigns in the SCCA F2000 Champion- ship Series in the United States. The test will take place in Australia.
